What we consider as food is a cultural question. In previous times several authorities were eager to define what we ought to and what we should not eat. Today, food choices are perceived as absolutely private. However, food choices become increasingly an issue for ethics. In our everyday food choices, we recognise value conflicts and injustice if millions of people are hungry and other millions have to battle against obesity, if biological resources are consumed that are needed for the survival of future generations, if biodiversity vanishes, if animals suffer. Therefore, the question what shall we eat needs to be discussed in the context of multidimensional responsibilities concerning the every-day practice.
