Through project work, students learn about the design and construction of timber and lightweight construction, focusing on façade construction and allowing for factors of energy-efficient planning and building. They are taught the structural foundations of timber construction and the construction of a building envelope, focusing on façade technology and energy efficiency.

For a design project, they develop a physical structure of a medium level of difficulty using methods of timber construction. The design is then built as either a timber or lightweight construction, including the development of a supporting frame specifically for wood, taking account of the interdependency of the load-bearing and construction grid. Students work in detail on the layer sequence of the building envelope, the construction principles and the incorporation of glazed elements into the building envelope.

The design project deals with the fundamental problems of building with wood. The students work on tasks of medium difficulty, in which they examine the ways in which the structural design is dependent on the building material wood, along with the connection between the design of the building envelope and energy loss.

Students learn about the interdependency of lighting and energy balance, and how this applies to façade planning. The development of form and structure is given a tangible form by means of models and drawings, which also serve to show the functional capability of selected details. A large-scale model is used to teach about materials and their processing, and the students learn to build architectural models for design and construction purposes.

Qualification objectives

Advanced knowledge of filigree construction with timber, and in-depth knowledge of the construction of a building envelope, as well as its typological application in architectural planning.
