Working through the construction documentation and detailed planning of an individual design concept for an existing building. Students take into account aspects of optimizing design and function, as well as ensuring that the building is brought up to current energy efficiency standards. The lecture teaches the basics of improving energy efficiency in existing buildings. The design and function of an existing building are optimized as part of a design project. Additions to the building and structural interventions should be planned. By working on the aspects of structural design, the students develop a logical construction concept for connecting existing buildings with new ones. They must also pay attention to any issues regarding the preservation of historic buildings. The building envelope will be adapted to meet the requirements of the current energy-saving regulations. To do so, the insulation effectiveness of different parts of the building has to be calculated. Reference will be made to Module 5.3, Building Redevelopment. The technical analysis of buildings for the module project is part of Module 5.3.

Qualification objectives

Fundamental skills in working on existing buildings from a structural point of view. Evaluating to what extent such buildings are worth preserving, based on factors of design, construction, function and sustainability.
