Goals

This lecture introduces how the key Internet protocols such as TCP, IP, DNS and HTTP work. In addition, the principles and architecture of the Internet are explained and students learn where functionality is implemented (hosts, routers, switches etc.). Students can practically apply their knowledge in the labs running in parallel to the lecture. The skills developed during the labs will enable students to practically build and debug networked applications and troubleshoot and manage operational networks.

Course content

Principles, functionality and practices of common Internet protocols and the Internet architecture, in particular:

  • Protocols of the application layer(such as HTTP and DNS)
  • Transport protocols (such as TCP and UDP)
  • Routing protocols (link state and distance vector)
  • Protocols of the link layer (e.g. Ethernet)
  • Network setup, maintenance and troubleshooting
