Study contents

The two-semester orientation program imparts basic knowledge in the fields of information systems, computer science and business administration. Students learn computer basics, software development, databases and accounting. Technical English and foreign language skills are also in focus.
International students learn German, German-speaking students learn a second foreign language from the range offered by the university's Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication (e. g. Italian, Spanish, French, Chinese).

From the third semester onwards, the intensification phase I begins. The curriculum now includes customizing and programming of information systems, data analytics and statistics. Business management knowledge is extended by knowledge from the areas of intercultural management & law and e-business. In the team project the project assignment is presented and the students bring their foreign language skills to a higher level.

While lectures in the first three semesters are held in English, lectures from the fourth semester onwards are partly held in English, partly in German, to enable international students to further improve their German language skills.

In the fifth semester, in addition to further specialization, students will be able to apply what they have learned in an internship semester. Within the framework of larger IT projects in companies, students have the opportunity to independently put their acquired know-how into practice. Applied Artificial Intelligence, Business Modeling, and Production & Logistics are the focus in the final semesters. In addition, extensive electives in the intensification phase II give students the opportunity to choose modules that correspond to their inclinations and later career aspirations. The offer is adapted by the faculty to the current requirements.

Study plan

The two-semester orientation program imparts basic knowledge in the fields of information systems. In the context of computer science, the focus is on programming & software engineering as well as on database systems. The subject Introduction to business administration and financial accounting opens the field of how business and enterprises work. In addition to former mentioned subjects, mathematics and languages are studied in greater depth.

From the third semester onwards, the intensification phase I begins. There you have a closer look at statistics and data analytics in computer science, at E-business and customizing and programming of information systems. Additionally, intercultural management & law, languages and international IT project and service management are studied.

In the first three semesters, all lectures are held in English, while German-language content follows from the fourth semester onwards. The fifth semester is the internship semester where students acquire know-how in IT projects in companies. During the intensification phase II the curriculum includes additional elective courses that enable students to form a professional profile.

The information systems discipline integrates computer science and business administration in an interdisciplinary subject and is one of the most important disciplines of the 21st century. Everyday life worldwide and our working world have been transformed by computers and especially by the internet. This is why IT specialists have the best career opportunities not only in the field of computer science and information technology but also in business administration. In order to meet the requirements of global corporations and customers worldwide, these specialists must possess not only specialist knowledge of information systems but also distinctive international skills.

Within the information systems discipline, companies need employees who can, for example, program applications to support business processes, plan and implement large global IT projects, or consult executives in information process issues. In a global world, these employees must also be able to act with linguistic and intercultural confidence.

Job opportunities
The job description of an international business information specialist is complex and differentiated. It includes the support of larger networked IT systems, application programming, system analysis and maintenance of existing software systems, concept creation of new applications, business process reengineering, planning and implementation of large global IT projects, sales, support and construction of applications, consulting on issues of information processing, training of employees and customers as well as web design and multimedia production. In view of a general shortage of computer scientists and IT specialists, the global career opportunities for business IT specialists are also very good in the future.

The research institutes located at the Faculty of Computer Science offer interested parties the opportunity to join the scientific community as research assistants or employees.

The institute HSA_innos works on behalf of companies and public funding bodies on IT security topics: from the development of secure products and forensic analyses to the protection of entire industrial plants.

The institute HSA_ired, consisting of four research groups from the Faculties of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, develops highly innovative solutions for the efficient processing of data in the fields of autonomous driving, image driving, image processing, artificial intelligence, radar technology and embedded systems.

Together with partners from industry and research, the institute HSA_ias develops innovative software solutions for digitalization projects. Agile system development methods are applied and further developed.

Lived Internationality

Our students come from all over the globe. The course of studies is designed in such a way that foreign students are successively introduced to the German language and culture in order to be able to apply for jobs in German companies. Consequently, all our lectures are taught entirely in English at the beginning and lectures from the fourth semester onwards are partly held in English / partly in German to enable international students to further improve their German language skills.

The Augsburg University of Applied Sciences maintains a large network of partner universities worldwide. In addition to the possibility of spending a semester abroad, degree seekers, incoming and outgoing students ensure an intensive international perspective. Internationally oriented courses and foreign languages are central components of the study program.

- language certificates in German with a higher language level are of course accepted (e.g. DSH min. level 1 and TestDaf min. level 3 in all 4 partial exams

(- DTZ A2 certificate is not sufficient!)

proof of the German language certificate is required upon enrolment, no later than 4 weeks after the start of the semester (01 October), therefore, the proof must be submitted to the Student Office by 2023-10-31 at the latest.

We would like to point out that a good to very good knowledge of English (at least level B2 is recommended according to GeRS) is required for the study program, as lectures in the first three semesters are held exclusively in English. From the 4th semester on, lectures and events will be held either in English or German.

For international students: When does the German language certificate have to be available?

The proof is usually required at the beginning of your studies. If you already have the relevant proof, please upload it with your application. Proof of the German language certificate is required upon enrolment, no later than 4 weeks after the start of the semester (01 October). Thus, the proof must be submitted to the Student Office by 2023-10-31 at the latest.
Non-native speakers of German can, in suitable cases, be admitted to the degree programme within the framework of the aptitude test without having to prove German language skills directly. However, certified proof of a language test is required no later than 4 weeks after the start of the semester (01 October). The applicants concerned will therefore only be admitted and enrolled under this condition.

Do all students start in the same language course?

No. At the beginning of your studies, a placement test is conducted so that you will start at your individual level and also attend the advanced language courses adapted to your level.
