The Project
Supervision of transformation processes in the energy supply – redefining the communication of cooperative guiding principles and visions by using interactive media systems (e- transform, 1.9.2013 bis 31.8.2016)
Germany’s federal government decision to advance the existing energy supply into a sustainable system raise up – besides the ecological and economic aspects – questions of social acceptance. This planned change seems to be retarded by common habits in production and everyday life, in which the consumption of resources and energy are rarely considered. Hence for a succeeding energy transition it is necessary to better communicate the context and especially the new chances and opportunities for everyone. Solutions won’t be realized without the cooperative engagement of as much as possible social stakeholders. In implementing the energy transition information and communication structures will be of particular interest: mediating constructive perspectives enables to uncover contradictions and dilemmas as well as defining solutions and new common routes. One of our central assumptions states that creative and by society adaptable interpretations of sustainable life style may constitute a conceptual framework not only for a change to a sustainable energy supply and consumption but as well emerge new forms of corporate culture.
We are developing a modular and multimedia knowledge platform based upon our model of target group lifestyle. With this different medial formats we address selected stakeholders and sensitize them for conscious energy consumption. The elements of the initiated transformation process will be made evident and comprehensible thus motivating the acteurs to involve and cooperate. We focus of the challenge to implement the energy transition in the growing mtropolitan regions. We analyse the cause-effect relationships between different mobility needs, individual demands, expectations of industry, possibilities for cooperative IT-based infrastructure and the interests of private households. For communicating future proof concepts visualise told interactive communication formats will become a key role.
Our project creates an orientation framework. It outlines new perspectives of revenue after a energy transition within a eco-social market economy. To apply and proof suggested solutions for knowledge transfer we create a media kit including a serious game. We do this in close cooperation with our professional partners, the European metropolitan Region Munich and the Regional Association FrankfurtRheinMain.

Publications
The publications from research project E-TRANSFORM, funded by BMBF, are ready for download on this page. In three reports researchers and artists of the Technical University Cottbus-Senftenberg and the University of Applied Sciences Augsburg, together with their industrial partners regional association FrankfurtRheinMain and European metropolitan Region Munich, give an insight in their findings. Furthermore the team published to scientific papers and the texts for their own conference at the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Berlin.

Results
Exhibition
The communication tools developed by this research project had been shown at the exhibition space of the Heirich Böll Foundation in Berlin. For June 30, 2016 we designed and realized a light weight exhibition format, which moved to another show in Berlin later. Our exhibition concept uses 80 paper cubes for different platforms/booths for presenting the different media formats developed by the e-transform team.
Media Analysis
Complex societal transformations like the German energy transition it is essential to know how to transfer subjects of change into adaptable narrations. This requires an insight into the media system and its production dynamics as well as an analysis of current user expectations. The media translations of this research project are accompanied by the thesis that a fundamental change from text/language-based formats to image/graphic-oriented content takes place, embedded or accelerated by the habitualization of digitized information and communication provision.
Documentary Films
Over the past two years, a number of compact documentary films have been produced as part of educational seminars with students at the University of Applied Sciences Augsburg. The content is based on the documentation of energy- and environmentally sensitive everyday activities. Various approaches to solving problems in the field of urban mobility, urban planning and building usage were discussed and protagonists portrayed.
Serious Game e-transform
In a contemporary urban quarter the player meets several characters with different views regarding energy and environment. The characters must cooperate to complete the tasks. The game is developed in a 2d version for smart phones, a 3d version is prepared. The game is based on a series principle and can be supplemented modularly with further episodes. An executable prototype was shown at the final conference.

Mobilo Habit Website
Mobilo Habit is an interactive website for children (primary school) to understand the reasons and goals of the energy transition. Two narrators are guiding the visitor through the site, explaining the relations and giving hints on simple solutions in everyday life. There are central questions: Why do we have a climate and environmental problem? Where and how are greenhouse gases produced and what does this have to do with us on earth?

Time Line
The energy transition is not only a current project, but a protracted social transformation that requires intergenerational cooperation. As the transition effects not only experts – and being a de-central technology during the transition more and more people are becoming experts – a growing part of society has to deal with the effects of regulations. In order to increase awareness of the urgency and necessity of the transition, an entertaining animated film and an informations graphics poster were developed. The chronological development of the energy transition over time is explained in an entertaining, informative and brief way. The primary aim is to convey to viewers that the energy transition is not only committed to abandoning nuclear technology, but also means a political, energetic and social reorientation in the course of a global responsibility with regard to climate change.
Visions
In Media the energy transition is represented with a very small number of similar and often more symbolical picture motifs. A considerable amount of these images use negative associations or, together with simplifying buzzwords, oppose technical, economic or aesthetic change. There is a lack of motivating visual utopias for the transformation process. This is why design students have visualized their ideas of a successful energy turnaround.
VR Projekt "Not Yet Visible"
Within the framework of the "Not Yet Visible" mediation concept, the perspectives of sustainable mobility and building usage will become tangible using exemplary neighbourhood developments with the help of VR visualisation. For this purpose, central elements of climate- and resource-sensitive everyday behaviour in the context of urban conditions and structures are prepared in such a way that the scope and attractiveness of individual options for action become clear. Through the intuitive and immersive approach of virtual reality, a significantly larger reference group can be sensitized to the central aspects and challenges of climate and environmental protection compared to the current discourse. The virtualised quarter is also intended to provide an expanded platform for cooperative exchange on the expectations of planners, investors, users, residents and visitors.
