The Author

Herman Melville was born in 1819 in New York. In 1838 he became a sailor and lived for a short time among the Typee cannibals. In 1850 he moved to Pittsfield, Massachusetts. There he formed a close friendship with Nathaniel Hawthorne. In 1851 he published "Moby Dick", but the novel was no success. His last years were marked by poverty and isolation and he died in 1891 at the age of 72.
