CARE REGIO - PIO-ÜB Editor as open source package for download

Nov 1, 2023

As part of the DigiPÜB sub-project of the CARE REGIO joint research project, a prototype editor was developed and made open source on 1 November 2023. The editor enables nursing facilities to use the new standard for care transfer forms.

The PIO transfer sheet (version 1.0.0 dated 21 December 2022) defined by mio42 GmbH on a legal mandate was deemed suitable as the standard format for the transfer. The THA was already involved in the commenting phase of the new data format.

However, there are some obstacles to the dissemination of the new standard, in particular:

  • the contents of the PIO-ÜB files are not directly readable by humans (FHIR, XML), so the information must be displayed in a clear user interface
  • the primary system manufacturers of the institutions are not obliged to implement the new format
  • the specification may not yet be consistent in all parts, so feedback from (end) users is desirable.

However, the specification is not comprehensible for end users; examples of what each definition means would be desirable as a basis for discussion. To address these points, the THA has created a prototype implementation of a PIO-ÜB editor and published it under the Apache 2.0 licence. The software enables the import, editing and export of PIO-ÜB files in machine-readable XML FHIR format (specification in version 1.0.0 of 21 December 2022, subset of the most important elements - PIO-ÜB small).

This can be used to achieve the following:

  • Bridge solution as long as the PIO-ÜB standard is not yet implemented across the board:
    • PÜBs can be generated in PIO-ÜB format
    • the most important information from received PIO OBs in PIO OB format can be displayed
    • Discussion basis for a user and interface concept: the presentation, grouping and linking of information was developed with the help of an agile development methodology involving continuous user feedback
  • Visualisation of the intended information, fields and code systems in the PIO OB so that end users can also provide assessments and feedback.
  • Support in the development of own PIO-ÜB modules for the primary system manufacturers, through knowledge from our prototype development.
