Project description

In cooperation with sports medicine specialists at the University Hospital Basel, software is being developed that will be used to analyse ultrasound sequences.

The intima-media thickness describes the size of the inner and middle layer of the vessel wall of the carotid artery. An increased thickness due to deposits correlates with various cardiovascular diseases, which can be prevented by regular examinations.

The aim of the project is to support doctors in analysing ultrasound sequences using modern technologies. With the help of software that is able to summarise various ultrasound images in sequences, the thickness of the vessel wall of the carotid artery is measured using existing pattern and contour recognition. Using this information and an existing data set, it is also possible to develop an algorithm for the automated assessment of the vascular condition, which provides a categorisation of the risk potential. This data can then be used to train a model using machine learning techniques, which can also predict the risk in the future.
