Continuing trends towards globalisation and in­ternationalisation are making speech-based com­munication more and more difficult. For the quick identification and understanding of many situa­tions, an additional communication system is es­sential. In the field of television, the EPG provides a wide variety of information about the broadcaster or the current programme.

In the case of the visualisation of each TV-pro­gramme’s categorisation, this project aims to find a uni­versal solution by using pictograms instead of written text. These have been developed based on the findings from an initial experiment with children – where basic, child-like views on shaping choices and visu­als were explored. IconControl is a visual tool that helps the user to identify the actual programme.
