Project description

"Development and Testing of an Integrated Model of Care in the Continuum of Allogeneic Hematopoietic SteM Cell TransplantatIon faciLitated by eHealth" - SMILe

The aim of the SMILe research project is to improve the aftercare situation of patients after an allogeneic stem cell transplant, which is necessary, for example, after a leukaemia disease. Within the framework of the project, it shall be worked out in which way e-health can contribute to improving the aftercare of patients.

The project is being carried out together with the University of Basel (https://smile.nursing.unibas.ch/) and the University Hospital of Freiburg. All medical aspects are developed there by expert teams from the fields of medicine and nursing sciences. Augsburg University of Applied Sciences is involved as a technical partner and is responsible for developing the e-health application.
As part of two semester projects of the Computer Science and Interactive Media degree programme, initial design drafts and interaction processes, as well as the SMILe Care component (monitoring) were developed and implemented as a first prototype in the summer semesters of 2017 and 2018.
In addition, the process of an allogeneic stem cell transplant at the University Hospital Freiburg was explained as part of a final thesis in the Interactive Media degree programme.

Since the start of the project in 2017, the prototype, consisting of the mobile patient application SMILe App and the monitoring solution for the care team SMILe Care, has been continuously developed in close cooperation with the project partners and adapted to the needs of the target group.
In 2020, the project was awarded the Theodor Fliedner Medal for innovative nursing practice.

Since January 2020, the developed components SMILeApp and SMILeCare have been tested by patients within the SMILe study at Freiburg University Hospital and University Hospital Basel. Parallel to this, the DARE project was launched, in which the ethical-social dimensions of the project are being investigated.
